What is Ongoza?
Ongoza (www.ongoza.org) is a fast-growing non-profit Kenyan accelerator for high-potential, early-stage young entrepreneurs. We provide one year of highly subsidized, customized weekly business advisory as well as access to financing and peer networks.
Your role will be to develop and implement Ongoza’s learning agenda and data infrastructure to help us make smarter decisions, iterate our advisory service approach to deliver even better value to entrepreneurs.
Roles and Responsibilities
As the Lead Data & Learning Analyst, you will collaborate extensively with the rest of the organization to collect and analyze data, generate and share reports and insights, design and develop systems and dashboards, and support strategy development. Your work will help build the systems, processes, and culture needed to drive data-driven decision-making across Ongoza.
Your specific roles and responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
Build a culture of quantitative and qualitative data-driven decision-making across Ongoza
Lead and/or collaborate on data projects from end to end (defining what to collect, how to collect and store it, analyzing it, presenting insights & making recommendations)
Define what data to collect:
Support other departments and Ongoza as a whole in identifying our Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) and updating our evaluation framework
Design data collection strategies and tools to collect data on Ongoza’s services and entrepreneurs and training others on using them
Process, clean, and verify the integrity of data collected, taking action to rectify and prevent any inconsistencies from recurring
Conduct interviews and focus groups with stakeholders
Explore technology options and implement solutions that enable us to store and access data, both for analysis and to support business processes
Conduct data analysis using tools including Excel, Python and R
Utilize data to make data-driven decisions:
Create data visualizations and presentations to communicate insights
Collaborate with other Ongoza departments to align on recommendations
Compile testimonials and impact reports for external audiences (potential clients, partners, and supporters) that demonstrate Ongoza’s effectiveness
Come up with solutions, in collaboration with stakeholders across Ongoza, to improve data collection and infrastructure as well as drive operational and process improvements
Maintain an up-to-date understanding of best practices in the field through consistent monitoring of Ongoza’s competitors, research conducted into field-wide learning initiatives (including GALI, ANDE) and other relevant management literature
Provide mentorship and guidance to the Data & Learning Analyst(s)
You may be asked to undertake such other or amended duties appropriate to the job as may be allocated from time to time.
Skills & Experience Needed
4+ years of experience in a data analyst or data scientist role
University degree in a quantitative discipline (such as economics, computer science, engineering, mathematics, or information technology)
Experience using Python and/or R and understanding of coding best practices
Experience using Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint
Solid grasp of relational databases and SQL queries
Creative problem-solving skills
Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
Ability to manage projects and balance competing priorities
Strong collaboration skills and tendencies, including the ability to lead interactions and meetings with the team and some external stakeholders
Ability to thrive within a fast-paced, rapidly growing and changing organization
A positive solutions-oriented attitude and drive for excellence
Willingness to travel occasionally
Authorization to work in Kenya
Ability to empathize with entrepreneurs and small business leaders
Knowledge of monitoring & evaluation systems
Experience with data collection platforms, CRM systems, and data visualization tools
Strategy development skills
