PowerGen Renewable Energy is a micro-grid developer, implementer, and operator in East Africa and West Africa, reshaping the prevailing rural electrification model in the region. PowerGen is building the energy system of the future using clean, renewable energy and smarter grids to deliver power to all.
As a Senior Software Developer, you will play a critical role in supporting the Company’s software development, database buildout, and platform upgrades. You will coordinate with an international technology team to keep the Company’s operations running smoothly with the best software tools possible. You will report to the head of the Software Team and work closely across the Technology and Customer functions to build the tools we use to serve customers in all locations in which PowerGen operates.
This role requires creative thinking about how established and new technologies can make a significant contribution to PowerGen’s mission of building the energy systems of the future in Africa. You will work with the Software Team to implement these ideas on PowerGen’s current and future grids in real time.
What You’ll Make Happen:
Create tools that increase the efficiency and reliability of PowerGen’s sales, service, and delivery of electricity to customers in multiple countries.
Design and develop the next evolution of PowerGen’s database that will support PowerGen’s growth across the continent.
Engage with Mobile Network Operators and mobile money aggregators to ensure a seamless interface between PowerGen's payment gateway and external service providers.
Interact with the PowerGen Research & Development Team to design and execute pilots in cutting-edge technologies like machine learning, Artificial Intelligence and blockchain that will test new methods of serving our customers.
Act as a key point of contact for multiple technology partners, and ensure that their products integrate flawlessly with all PowerGen systems.
Identify, prioritize and track the resolution of key software issues that arise across PowerGen’s software ecosystem. Use those solutions to continuously improve existing software tools.

You Already Have:
3-4 years of delivering software projects for commercial clients
Failure in a team or project delivery and the lessons you learned along the way, including root causes
Excellent communication with peers, managers, and junior developers
Critical thinking & problem solving
Ability to prioritize team workflow and manage implementation
Strong organization and project management
Experience (broad knowledge in most, or deep knowledge in some of the following):
Linux and Windows based systems (local and cloud)
Designing, setting up, and managing software development environments (Dev, Testing, Staging, and Production)
Implementation/use of share code and code versioning systems
Design and development (end-to-end) of software (web-based & mobile applications)
Demonstrated interest in / knowledge of Internet of Things (IoT) based solutions and enabling platforms
Systems testing and debugging
Design and implementation of SQL & NoSQL Databases
Design and building APIs
Integrating 3rd party systems with Mobile Network Operators or Mobile Money Aggregator systems
Designing, building and managing multi-component systems
Developing user-guides for developed software
Developing or managing software/applications for remote sensing/actuation
Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning
Bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or related field
