We got to catch up with Eunice Nyandat, founder My Biz Marketer, one of the companies based at the iHub, and here is what she had to say…

How did you come up with the idea?

While working as a concierge to tech entrepreneurs, I was constantly answering marketing questions based on my experience as a product manager at a fortune 500.

It became a thing.

What does MBM offer and to whom?

We offer digital marketing, digital advertising and analytics services to businesses. The marketing messages are more powerful when well said and to the right audience. We work across several aspects of marketing, advertising  – from branding and positioning to targeted outreach and strategy, Go-to-Market strategy, campaigns, advocacy, events and communication.

How does MBM work exactly?

We carry out consultation meetings where we diagnose your business and pin down gaps that would need attention. Thereafter, we come up with a proper plan for execution. Helping customers identify their audience.

How have you managed to build a successful customer base?

We are in the process of building a consistent and successful customer base. But so far, we've had happy repeat customers whose goals have been met and can attest to the credibility of our services. The strategy that has been the most fruitful is that of referrals and word of mouth. Participating in events and strategic partnerships have also helped greatly.

What is unique about MBM?

Being a business which was based in Atlanta, we were one in 300, a very competitive space. It is the same in Nairobi, however, there is one critical difference; the rate of adoption is low. My Biz Marketer provides a customer a marketing solution that it needs; nothing more nothing less. A marketing strategy tailor made for a client which is straight-forward and transparent.

What kind of culture exists in MBM?

We are a creative and technical team, thus making space for personal growth and individuality. At MBM, we empower each team member to learn, make decisions and grow. We are still a young startup and still trying to establish ourselves.

What’s most exciting about your traction to date?

In the last several months, we partnered with the African Women Studies Centre of the University of Nairobi, marketing and launching the “Women Entrepreneur program”, which continued into a monthly 3 day workshop. We also did the same with “Nairobi Innovation Week 2018.”  

The team has grown to six and recently adding interns from Strathmore University for Marketing and Finance.

We also worked on TechStar Startup Weekend Women’s Edition which was held on May 25th- 27th. Techstars Startup Weekend is a 54-hour weekend event, during which groups of developers, business managers, startup enthusiasts, marketing gurus, graphic designers among others pitch their ideas, form teams around those ideas, and work to develop a working prototype.

How do you measure success?

Internally, we measure our success by the number of conversions we get and how profitable it is to the business. Repeat business is a great indicator.

Externally, we measure success if goals set were achieved and how happy our clients are.

If you had the chance to start your business over again, what would you do differently?

Nothing, there is no perfect way to start a business. You will always find gaps even when you have a structure. it is going to be a working progress every day.

What will MBM look like in 5-10 years if things went according to plan?

We see a team of 15-25, a boutique agency. Growing and championing the startups and SMEs brands to lasting businesses.

Being a recognized brand name would also be great, however doing good work for our customers is rewarding too.

How do you help your team grow to the next level and be their best?

We believe learning never stops and we have to upgrade our skills considering the field we are operating in. With that in mind, all our team members are enrolled in different and relevant online classes to stay up-to-date, and to become partners of relevant corporations that benefit us eg. Google and Microsoft. Learning Everyday!

What have been some of your failures, and what have you learnt from them?

  • Weak corporate structure: We did not define our structures clearly thus causing inefficiency.
  • Growing too fast without the team to keep up with the workload. We have had times when we took more than we could chew hence dropping the ball.

If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?

  • Have your structures clearly defined before anything.
  • It is okay to say NO to deals when need be.
  • Never compromise on your set principles .
