Entrepreneurs from across East Africa convened in Nairobi for a five-day bootcamp at the iHub. The bootcamp was part of the Traction camp Accelerator program to help East African Startups commercialize and scale innovative digital products.

The bootcamp was made up of a diverse group of entrepreneurs from varying sectors, countries, backgrounds and experience levels. The startups that attending the bootcamp include; Online Hisab, Zayride and Business TYC from Ethiopia, Yubeyi Online shop from Rwanda, Simon Toto foods and Kokote from Tanzania and Bluewave Insurance Agency, SapamaERP, MyAfya, KlevaPlus, Mobilized Construction, Dream Africa and Ukulima Tech from Kenya. Hub managers from different hubs in East Africa also attended the bootcamp.

Over the course of the five-day intensive program, the entrepreneurs covered topics, such as investment readiness and investor engagement, along with negotiations, regulatory environments, and internationalization. The sessions were facilitated by iDev International and Wlyde International.

Through long days of lecture sessions, group activities, presentations, live negotiations, pitching sessions and panel discussion, these entrepreneurs worked to continually improve their business model and work toward their success.

Before joining traction camp, I was in a world of doubt as to whether Bluewave would gain from the program, I was also worried about locking an entire week off our already crazy schedule pending a product launch. I can honestly say the information gained was incredible as this was a first boot-camp for Bluewave as a Business.I will recommend Traction camp to any founder who intends to move their business from the idea stage to launch, pilot and market traction. The consultants are on point and offered an incredible world of knowledge. We would certainly do it again should we have another business to push into the market - Adelaide Odhiambo CEO Bluewave Insurance Agency

Prior to attending the bootcamp, the entrepreneurs have been having mentorship sessions. The mentors are meant to provide criticism that is constructive to the entrepreneurs in helping them make informed business decisions and save them from suffering from the same mistakes they’ve already made. The startup will continue with the mentorship sessions until December. Are interested in being a mentor? reach us at tractioncamp[at]ihub.co.ke

The week-long bootcamp was very interactive. The growth strategy and company evaluation sessions were the best for me. The highlight of the week was when MyAfya received an award for the most improved startup in the program. The last few months have been really tough but we had an amazing support from our mentor who believed in us from the start. We also met many potential clients and partners during the cocktail and this is just the beginning. We will be forever greatful to the organizers of the Traction Camp - Jackline Murimi founder MyAfya

The bootcamp culminated to a Demo and cocktail event where the entrepreneurs got a chance to network with local and international investors and interact with other key stakeholders. Three startups in the program were awarded based on their participation, performance, and growth throughout the program.

Bluewave Insurance Agency received an award for being the most engaged startup in the program, MyAfya received an award for the most improved startup in the program and ZayRide received an award for the startup with the potential to have the biggest market and impact in the program. Find a brief description of the three winners below;

      • MyAfya is an application that helps hypertension patients to manage their condition. The user gets access to health practitioners, save blood pressure history and share such data with caregivers. We also create awareness and distribute home testing kits to be used along with the app
      • ZayRide is the Uber of Ethiopia, on-demand taxi, and Ambulance dispatching application that connects riders and drivers with. We recently added a delivery service. So our loyal customers get more services with a single application.
