iHub partnered with uWakili an online legal services platform to provide specific pro bono legal services to the startups in the ecosystem. uWakili is an online legal services platform that provides Kenyan businesses and individuals access to cost-effective and easy-to-use online legal services.

The partnership entails a monthly in-depth training for startups and entrepreneurs on a broad range of issues. The training are facilitated by advocates with specialized training and experience in the different areas. So far we have had two training, the first one was on legal structure and compliance and the next one was on founder stock agreements.

The next training will be on Intellectual property. The training will be facilitated by Lillian Makanga a research fellow and legal advisor at the Centre for Intellectual Property and Information Technology Law (CIPIT).

Intellectual property is an invention from the human intellect that is protected for the creator’s use under the law as a patent, copyright, trademark, or trade secret. A good understanding of Intellectual Property Rights is very critical to the success of businesses. The training will cover the following topics in Intellectual Property

  • Copyright
  • Process & Costs

About Lillian Makanga

Ms. Makanga is a research fellow and legal advisor at the Centre for Intellectual Property and Information Technology Law (CIPIT), a centre of the Strathmore Law School in Nairobi, Kenya. She works with inventors to identify, utilize and commercialize their intellectual property. Ms. Makanga holds an LLB Hons from Catholic University of Eastern Africa. She is a licensed Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and registered to practice before the Kenya Industrial Property Institute.
