Kuweni Serious is a non-profit initiative that was started in October 2009 by 3 young Kenyans with the aim of finding out why Kenyan youth are so detached from politics. Along the way, they've met and interviewed political activists, journalists, and collected views from ordinary Kenyans. Kuweni Serious recently begun collaborating with Just A Band, the Kenyan electro-band behind the recent Makmende craze, to encourage young Kenyans to participate in the constitution review process and make informed decisions at the forthcoming referendum. They are putting together pretty cool campaigns that are targeted not at getting young Kenyans to vote either one way or another, but rather to critically challenge what they consider important in their governance. Their comic strips, for example, aim to tackle what a good constitution should look like, and thus what people should be seeking to uphold when they will be voting. Their vox pop interviews cover a series of questions (what do you love about Kenya, what do you hate, what would you change, etc) that they hope will get people to think about the underlying issues: what do they want to protect about their country, what do they want to discard and eventually, how can they actively participate in their own governance? Their new tagline is 'fighting the evil forces of apathy', and they hope that this is something that they can do as they run this campaign that will cover not just the referendum, but the run-up to the 2012 elections as well. They would like to invite you to the official launch of their campaign on Friday 23rd July, from 6-8 p.m. at the iHub.
