Is freemium revenue model taking over premium in entertainment?

Entertainment industry has growing immensely locally and catching up with the international markets. The same has been happening in the technology (especially in entertainment) space. More local developers have with huge interest noticed the trends in the app stores and are taking advantage of it. Entertainment apps make approximately 75% of apps in the stores, with the most downloaded apps being games and music apps.

Locally, this has been the story too, with apps like Ma3Racer having over 1 Million Downloads. Most of these apps are for free, at least for sometime. This kind of revenue model is called freemium model. It is a business model by which a virtual product is provided free of charge, but a premium is charged for advanced features, functionality, or virtual goods. This model is currently taking the virtual market space by storm. It begs the question; is freemium taking over premium model in entertainment?

M:lab East Africa will hold the first Wireless Wednesday on Entertainment on 31st July 2013. The event themed "Is freemium revenue model taking over premium in entertainment" will attract mobile application developers, Ad Networks, Digital Agencies, gamers, animators and cartoonists, creatives, entrepreneurs and other stakeholders in the entertainment industry.
